Japanese beach destinations vary more than most visitors expect. Okinawa and Ishigaki have coral reefs and strong UV. The Shonan coast near Kamakura is cooler and more casual. What you pack for one is not necessarily right for the other. This is a practical guide based on what our customers have told us works.
Swimwear for coral reef destinations ¶
Ishigaki and the outer islands of Okinawa have some of the clearest water in Japan, and also some of the strongest UV index readings in the country, regularly reaching 11 or above in July and August. A swimsuit with UPF 40 protection is not optional here. Our Riviera Bikini and Soleil One-Piece both carry UPF 40 ratings. If you are snorkelling, a one-piece or a rash guard over a bikini top is more practical than a bikini set alone.
Cover-ups that work for beach-to-dinner ¶
Most beach restaurants in Okinawa and Ishigaki are casual enough that a cover-up over a swimsuit is acceptable for dinner. The key is a cover-up that does not look like beachwear when you are not at the beach. Our Dune Cover-Up in the Nishijin linen-cotton blend reads as a light summer dress when worn with sandals. It dries quickly after swimming and does not need ironing.
What to bring for the Shonan coast ¶
Shonan is different. The water is cooler, the UV is lower, and the beach culture is more surf-oriented and casual. A bikini set is fine, but you will want a light layer for the evenings, which cool down quickly once the sun drops. The Dune Cover-Up works here too, but a light cotton shirt over a bikini top is equally appropriate.
Packing light without compromising ¶
The most efficient beach packing strategy is two swimwear pieces and one cover-up. Two pieces means you always have a dry option while the other is drying. One cover-up that works for both beach and evening means you do not need to pack a separate outfit for dinner. A cotton dust bag for your swimwear keeps it separate from the rest of your luggage and doubles as a laundry bag on the way home.
Japanese summers are hot, humid, and worth every inconvenience. Pack less than you think you need. Wash your swimwear in the sink each evening. It will be dry by morning.
